Who doesn’t love overpowered station wagons? America apparently, because right now the only high powered wagons you can buy stateside are the 577 horsepower, all wheel drive Mercedes E63 AMG Estate and the Volvo V60 Polestar. Although, Volvo is only sending 120 Polestar branded V60’s over to the States, so that pretty much leaves just the Mercedes. I guess it’s really not that surprising that people don’t want to buy a six figure wagon, that is, until you compare us to Europe.
Across the pond if you want a ridiculously expensive and overpowered wagon you can choose from the; Mercedes CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake, Mercedes CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake, Mercedes C63 AMG Estate, Mercedes E63 AMG Estate, Audi RS4 Avant, Audi RS6 Avant, Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake, Vauxhall VXR8 Estate, and Ford Focus ST Wagon. The Europeans love themselves a fast wagon, but America has been neglected from this niche market for a while now. Mercedes once sold their C-Class estate here, but slow sales drew the model away before we could receive the newer AMG variants. BMW do not make any M-powered wagons anymore, but they did sell the E60 M5 Touring in Europe and Audi has also never given us the Avant variants of the RS4 and RS6.
Volkswagen is currently deciding whether or not to import the new Golf R Variant stateside, even though they are already selling the standard Golf Variant here as the replacement for the Jetta Sportwagen. The auto brands selling these fast wagons have seen huge success around Europe, but in order to get them stateside they must identify demand for them and justify the federalization costs of bringing the model overseas. Recently, America has been driving the demand away from minivans and station wagons into compact and full-size crossovers. With the current E63 AMG Estate sales numbers looking the way they are, power wagons coming stateside anytime soon looks unlikely.
